Applying virtual and augmented reality technologies in teaching foreign languages at university

Currently, augmented and virtual reality technologies (AR/VR technologies) are increasingly being applied in the field of education. This article discusses the concepts of augmented and virtual reality and analyzes their opportunities in teaching foreign languages. Particular attention is paid to the applications that help to create and put into practice educational materials based on AR/VR technologies. The findings show that although VR/AR technologies have been involving in the field of entertainment for a long time, but at present they are actively being introduced into the educational process. Analyzing the benefits and drawbacks of VR/AR technologies in teaching foreign languages, the author comes to the conclusion that these innovative tools help to create a real, authentic communicative environment involving the active immersion of each individual student. Gamification elements can increase the motivation and reduce anxiety and self-doubt when learning a non-native language. Despite all the positive aspects of VR/AR technologies in education, their use is still limited due to certain barriers, such as the lack of sufficient technical skills among teachers and high equipment costs.
