The issue of motivation to foreign language learning among students of a transport university

The issue of non-linguistic students’ motivation to succeed in their foreign language (English) studies belongs to the group of topics that are widely discussed in many language studies. Nevertheless, there is still ongoing debate among scholars about how motivation can affect the study of a foreign language, since it is not so clear and obvious how it can direct students to successes or failures in its development. The aim of the study is to determine the level of learning motivation of transport university students and the factors influencing it. The article highlights the issues of intrinsic and extrinsic learning motivation, provides a classification of motivation to learn a language, and identifies the reasons that influence the decline in motivation to learn. The paper also draws attention to dependence of motivation of non-linguistic students on the teacher’s psychological and pedagogical activity in the foreign language classroom. The results of a survey of first-year students of all specialities of a transport university are analyzed, and the main motives of their learning activities in a foreign language are highlighted.
