The study deals with the patterns and prerequisites of the Russian system of vocational teacher education and its development. Based on the retrospective analysis, the existing traditions of vocational teacher education are presented, their positive and negative aspects are determined. The research reveals the key inconsistencies and current issues of the vocational teacher education development in the modern context (scientific, arrangement, economic). The author analyzes the major changes in the system of vocational teacher education due to the restructuring of vocational education, considers the attempts to address the negative impacts of ongoing reforms in the vocational education system, and predicts trends towards further development of vocational teacher education in the light of experience. The scientific community is to give scientific credence to and design a balanced development model for the vocational teacher education system in accordance with modern requirements.
