The topic of the research borders between pedagogics and philology and deals with the problem of preparing professional personnel through reading professionally oriented texts in non-linguistic higher educational institutions. The development of technical education in modern Russia is viewed as one of priority directions of educational policy. However, this sector of education has certain problems, in particular the problem of maintaining the balance between technical and humanities component in the education and upbringing of the harmonious, fully developed personality of a future specialist. The article looks at the problem of teaching professionally oriented reading. Special attention is paid to the correlation between humanities and technical component in foreign language teaching. The work discusses different kinds of reading in the professionally oriented education of students of higher educational institutions. Reading is viewed as the goal and means of education.
