The article discusses the issues of memorial memory and commemorative practices in terms of their psychological content and possible methods of study. It is noted that any historically significant events from the point of view of modern statehood and changes in the conditions of community life generate a semantic reassessment of the past, expressed in the semantic interpretation of retrospective discourses and narratives. In the realities of modern Russian society one of the most productive methods of studying the reflection of the historical past in the minds of people seems to be the activity-based approach. The analysis of the formation of consciousness and personality, in general, can be considered as an alternative strategy for studying the historical consciousness of modern society. Attention is drawn to the fact that socio-historical memory is fundamentally selective in nature, it is symbolic and mythological. Such a conclusion is predetermined by the fact that the socio-historical memory, being formed in the personal and social planes, is set not by formally documented historical sources, but by relatively volatile temporal configurations of the historical retrospective series of events.
