The article analyses the second detective novel by Julian Barnes «Fiddle City» written by him under an assumed name Dan Kavanagh. Imitating the tradition of American «hard-boiled» detective fiction to shock the reader, Barnes, masked as his alter ego, appeals to one of the most provocative themes - ethnic and racial intolerance. Unfolding the acute matter of inter-ethnic relations the author enters the ironic polemics with other literary works. Depicting the inside of the exemplary English airport, he uncovers a grotesque reflection of the existing criminal world.
