This paper examines the problem of architectural education as both engineering and artistic, a pressing issue facing the modern scientifi c community. On the one hand, an architect must be an engineer with a comprehensive understanding of all the systems and structures of the future building, and on the other, they must be able to develop an expressive, attractive image of the designed object. However, applicants have varying levels of graphic training upon entering university, and mastering certain competencies in four years of a bachelor’s degree is not always possible. At the same time, the line between artistic and engineering disciplines in nurturing a competent architect is very fi ne. The article also examines the development of architectural education in general and monitors graduates’ subsequent professional employment. It proposes ways to engage students in research and design work to enhance their competitiveness in the labor market. The paper fi rst formulates a concept for training engineer-architects that integrate engineering and artistic competencies, and proposes a system of measures to restore the traditions of architectural education and enhance the attractiveness of the architectural profession in a changing labor market. Practical recommendations for introducing innovations into the educational process are developed, aimed at improving graduate employability and enhancing the competitiveness of Russian architects. This article presents a comprehensive study of the problems of architectural education In Russia, revealing the need to revive the traditions of personal mentoring and restore lost elements of traditional approaches.
