The article considers the main theses of the problem of emotional intelligence that were developed in Russian and foreign psychology as a basis of the emotional intelligence development. Scientific novelty of the author's approach implemented in the teaching of the "Methodological Foundations of Psychology" course is determined by a number of criteria: 1) building of exercises aimed at updating of subject's role, reinforcing persistence, allowing creative fulfilment; 2) learning of the principles, categories, and paradigms of psychology in the emotionally attractive form, which contributes to the development of emotional intelligence; 3) heuristic potential of exercises based on the cognitive affective nature of humour.
