This article deals with the possibility of free development of emotional intelligence that is defined as the set of mental abilities related to the processing of emotional information. The relevance of the topic is determined by the necessity to study the structure of emotional intelligence in order to maximize the impact of learning process at the university and increase students’ adaptability to the educational process. The author presents step-by-step description and results of original training aimed at developing emotional intelligence in first-year students. This training is based on the structure of emotional intelligence offered by D.V. Lyusin. It consists of three consecutive parts such as preparation, situational games, and analysis. The training under review represents a technology of active group work focused on the development of emotional and reflective qualities. The study proves the effectiveness of the training as confirmed by the increase in emotional intelligence among students who participated in the study.
