The central aim of the article is to present a typology of exercises for teaching, which aims at achieving the ability to communicate. The article begins with clarification of some terms connected with the process of communicative competence formation. The main goal of the research is the analysis of some exercises aimed at preparation of students for communication. These exercises include pronunciation, the development of an active vocabulary and the so-called markers of discourse. This is followed by exercises designed to help structure the process of communication. The focus of these exercises is the systematic planning of one's own speech, by practicing to distinguish essential information from nonessential, to ask questions, to respond to questions, to conduct discussions, but also to structurally prepare monological speech. Finally the author offers a variety of exercises that simulate real communication, for example in role-playing games, and exercises that already include real communication in the form of conversations between students and teachers.
