The paper deals with the development of students’ independence as an important personal quality that determines the success of young specialists’ professional activity and their ability to be involved in continuing education. The author reveals the essence of the concepts of independence and student’s independent work. The research presents the types of work and stages of classes that contribute to the active development of students’ independence. It is important to develop independence in students in the first semester since first-year students, as a rule, lack self-regulation, responsibility, willpower, the desire to set specific goals and achieve them. The study focuses on the advantages of modern Blackboard e-learning system that is to develop students’ independence while learning foreign languages.
