The article examines some of the problematic aspects of mastering the discipline of “Practical Course of Translation in Special Fields”. Translation of literary texts is generally considered one of the most difficult types of translation because it is characterized by metaphor and a multitude of contextual meanings, which it is important to preserve in the text by conveying them in another language. Therefore, in practical classes it is necessary not only to familiarize students with the key aspects of this type of translation, but also to teach them to critically compare the translated text with the original. Using the example of constructing the image of characters, the article demonstrates the difference between reader's perception and reaction to the image generated by the text, highlights the linguistic and cultural factors affecting the subjective perception of the translation and describes an approximate algorithm for the comparative analysis of two texts. The conclusion is that the linguistic and extra-linguistic material of the translated text needs to be carefully worked out in order to preserve the author's imagery.
