The article discusses in detail the evolution of military-historical museums in the interwar period. Particular attention is paid to the continuity in the development of these cultural institutions compared to the imperial period, the increase in their number, as well as the desire of the Soviet state to give a systematic perpetuation of the military-historical past. In the 1920-1930th the upbringing of the patriotism of USSR citizens intensified, including through military history museums, which played a large role during the years of World War II. Although the expositions contained criticism of the tsarist army, this did not cancel the respect for heroes and ordinary soldiers, while the emphasis on fighting spirit and technical equipment was fully consistent with the goals and objectives of the defense construction of the USSR.
