The authors of the paper consider opportunities provided by the cognitive-discoursive analysis of the source text. The aim of the analysis is to construct a frame of its dominant concept and represent it in the target text. Modeling the main concept of the original is regarded as an important stage of translation activity and one of the main factors determining how recipients of the target text will understand the author's concept, which generally determines the relevance of the study. To model the dominant concept of the chapter “Attitudes” of the book “A Psychological Profile into the Criminal Mind” by R. Butterfield the frame analysis method was used. The results of constructing the frame of the concept ATTITUDES at the stage of pre-translation analysis of the source text are presented. The analysis made it possible to single out the following slots in the frame of the concept under consideration: subjects, objects, functions, constituents, formation, risks, attitude change. The most representative slots necessary for understanding the dominant concept have been identified, which include functions, formation, risks, attitude change, and sub-slots such as cognitive dissonance and selective exposure. The article discusses the difficulties of representing the concept ATTITUDES when translating the original into Russian, associated with the need to master special knowledge, the ambiguity of terms verbalizing this concept, and also transferring special knowledge in the target language. The paper contains the description and motivation of translator's decisions, referring to understanding the source text as a whole, including its form and ideas. Variants of the source text representation in the target culture are given.
