Rhythm as an expressive text forming element of the president's inaugural speech: translation problems

The article examinesthe rhythmic features of the text of E. Macron's inaugural address, as well as on the problem of translation of the rhythmicity of the original text in the translation. On the basis of the linguistic and stylistic analysis, the rhythmic tools that occur more often in E. Macron's inaugural address have been determined. The difficulties faced in translating the president's speech voice-over were described, related to the attempt to preserve the rhythmic structure of the original text in the translation. Rhythm is an important component of the text, contributing to its integrity. Using certain rhythmic means, the author can realize the subtext content, thus exerting verbal and nonverbal influence on the perception of the text by the recipient. The analysis of the translation showed that the reproduction of the rhythmic means of the original is possible, but there are limitations. The means of grammatical, lexical and structural-compositional level can almost always be preserved in the translation text, while the means of phonetic level are almost impossible. If it is impossible to reproduce the rhythm of the source text, using the same means, it can be compensated by another means, including a means of another level of text. It is also worth noting that the need for voice-over translation and synchronization of audio tracks in some cases prevented the reproduction of the rhythm of the source text, but we managed to compensate for this. In addition, the performance of voice-over translation, of course, influenced some of the translation decisions that we made.
