Imagination, as a psychological category, is associated with cognitive processes and abilities and plays a significant role in the cognition of the surrounding reality. This issue seems to be especially important in primary school age, when educational activities become leading, and the cognitive sphere begins to actively develop. Despite the relevance of this topic in primary school and the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard, researchers may be confronted with the choice of diagnostic methods due to their limited selection in the domestic literature or inconsistency with the present research objectives. The paper systematizes the existing diagnostic techniques depending on the types of imagination. At the theoretical and methodological level, the role of intellectual operations is considered as conscious mental actions associated with the cognition and resolution of the tasks facing the individual in the development of the imagination of younger students. The intellectual operations that are involved in creating new images are presented. Their formation in children of primary school age in educational activities contributes to the development of imagination and productivity.
