The Novel The Demons (The Possessed) by F.M. Dostoevsky in German Translations: the Problem of Reproducing the Title

This article examines the specifics of translating the title of F.M. Dostoevsky’s novel The Demons (The Possessed) into German. As a result of studying the semantics of the lexical units chosen by different translators to render the novel’s title, and examining their use in German translations of the Bible, a number of precedent texts in German literary fiction, and translations of works by Russian writers, manifestations of linguistic and conceptual asymmetry have been identified. This asymmetry prevents the full depth of meaning of the original title from being conveyed in translation and narrows the horizons for interpreting the work’s semantic dominants that it opens up. None of the existing German variants of title for the novel (Die Besessenen, Die Dämonen, Die Teufel, Böse Geister) can fully convey its metaphorical meaning on its own. The version Die Besessenen (H. Putze, 1888) shifts the subject-object emphasis and fails to capture the notion of demons as active forces within the novel. The title Die Dämonen (E.K. Rahsin, 1906) carries an overly romanticized connotation and endows the novel’s demons with a power they do not actually possess. The variant Teufel (Н. Röhl, 1921) may significantly narrow the horizon of the reader’s perception of the work. The title Böse Geister, proposed in S. Gaier’s translation (1998), appears to be the most accurate, as it avoids undesirable cultural connotations and preserves the connection between the title and the Gospel epigraph. Due to the plurality of translational interpretations characterizing the reception of the novel The Demons (The Possessed), the German reader has the opportunity to comprehend the complex set of meanings embedded in the novel’s title.
