This article attempts to interpret the iconographs of a number of Evangelical events, which are atypical for Russian iconography, depicted in the icon “The Almighty was Saved on the throne, with Martha, Mary and 28 scenes of earthly life.” Solving this problem will help to at least partially understand the theological quest of its author, Semyon Spiridonov Kholmogory, one of the most gifted isographers of the second half of the 17th century. The legitimacy of the master’s use of the iconographic variants under consideration is proved in the article on the basis of their obvious correspondence to the ideas of the thinkers of the Orthodox East, which have long been known and accepted in Russia as canonical.
