The article examines independent work as one of the leading kinds of students'' activity in studying foreign language in a technical university. Modern standards allocate a significant amount of education process time to the independent work of students. The organization of independent work must be controlled by the teacher. there is a significant number of methods and technologies which aid the efficient development of cognitive activity in students and help them to expand their knowledge horizons. the article uses the examples of such methods as module education, projects method and audiovisual method. the necessity of independent work of students is due to the tasks of independent work skills formation. the large variety of methods and technologies which exists today encourages thinking process and aids the development of intellectual qualities of students. this later helps them to expand their range of knowledge and use it in practice.
