Semantics of the limit: the specificity of representation

Бесплатный доступ

The article considers the specificity of objectification of the abstract essence of the limit in the Buryat language, which reflects the worldview and understanding of the world of native speakers. It has been established that in the Buryat language picture of the world, the comprehension of the limit, which includes the beginning, end, and boundary, was a result of understanding the place and position, on the one hand, and orientation in space, on the other, as well as the perception of the object of description in the aggregate of its parts, constituting a single whole. At the core of the idea of limit, the language exploits the model of dynamic movement, which allows transferring the starting point and parameters for achieving the goal. This model uses the concepts a dead end, an angle, a peak, and an abyss, in which the quantitative component, in addition to indicating the limit, serves to measure the distance. The zoomorphic and somatic nominations encode initial and final spatial landmarks. We consider узуур ‘point, peak’ to be nationally specific.
