Semiotics of Manga in the Context of Visual Culture

The worldwide popularity of traditional Japanese manga art is explained by the current world’s focus on visual methods of conveying information. The author emphasizes that the visual turn of the 20th-21st centuries set a new vector in the field of art, and manga, in its original essence, turned out to be complementary to the spirit of the times. Despite the complexity of the artistic language, it was manga that laid the foundations for the recognition of Japanese culture throughout the world. Visual culture has become a characteristic component of the daily life of a modern person, and its reading has become an object of study for art historians, including with the help of semiotic methods. Semiotics as a science of signs contains unique tools for analyzing manga. The author concludes that the system of signs that form a special symbolic and artistic language allows one to most fully convey the depth and multi-layered nature of manga.
