The article investigates synonym sets of verbs in Buryat and Mongolian languages with the general meaning of the verb fear. Analysis of the synonym dictionaries of these languages revealed that, in both cases, the synonym sets are either unjustifiably nar-rowed or expanded. In the Buryat dictionary, the sets tend to be narrowed, whereas in the Mongolian dictionary, they are expanded. Nevertheless, these synonym sets exhibit a common core, explained by the genetic relationship between Buryat and Mongolian, as well as differ-ential phenomena resulting from the particular development and functional conditions of each language. Dominant within the synonym sets are the identical verbs айха / айх (aikha / aikh), while in Mongolian the older variant аюух (ayuukh) (ayuqu – in the orthography of classical written Mongolian) has been preserved. In both languages, this verb be-came the basis for the formation of the noun аюул (ayuul, danger) and the adjectives аюултай (ayuultai, dangerous) and аюулгүй (ayuulgui, safe).
