The article discusses the words имЪние, животъ as key terms that serve as generic items of property in the ancient Russian language of XI-XIV centuries. The functioning of these names in the ancient texts was due to the linguistic situation of diglossia, which used two languages - a standard ancient language that served the public needs of the Kievan Rus, and the Church Slavonic language, used with religious and sacred functions. In the use имтние, животъ can be traced not only additional functional distribution of lexical items in different spheres of communication, but also the semantic and stylistic differentiation of words.
