The paper discusses the problem of semantic reading of text information among an international audience. The authors consider the main stages of foreign-language text manipulations. The emphasis is placed on teaching the semantic reading strategies to students and the development of critical thinking while reading. These issues play an important role in dealing with newspapers and fiction as there is a hidden meaning behind the phrases that are comprehensible only to the Russian-speaking reader. The purpose of the study is to consider the semantic reading as a process of perception, comprehension, understanding, and interpretation of a statement, sentence, or phrase and conduct the lexical and grammatical analysis of the texts proposed. The authors present several types of assignments focused on understanding the meaning of the statement. The research analyzes certain lexical units as well. The effective use of various text-manipulation strategies will facilitate the development of personal and metasubject results of semantic reading among international students.
