The paper actualizes the need for the formation of soft skills in future teachers under the conditions of permanent changes in the system of general education. The place of social adaptability, as the ability of an individual to adapt, in the soft skills system is shown. The analysis of scientific literature on the problem of the formation of social adaptability viewed as soft skills in the system of professional training of future teachers was carried out. The essence of the concept of 'social adaptability' is defined. The results of an empirical study of the preferences of students of the pedagogical direction of training in the choice of adaptation strategies that form the basis of the social adaptability of the individual are presented. The influence of the preferences of future teachers in the choice of adaptation strategies on the success of their further social and professional adaptation and personal and professional development is shown. Depending on the identified preferences of students, the directions of actions in the course of their professional training in higher education are determined to optimize the choice of adaptation strategies as the basis for the social adaptability of future teachers.
