The article analyses Gaskell's shorter works: "Mr. Harrison's Confessions" (1851), "The Last Generation in England" (1849) and "The Cage at Cranford" (1863). The stress is done on the link between these shorter works and "Cranford" on the level of plot, characters and themes. The article also deals with socially determined characters.
