The work presents various periods of history and modernity of the socio-cultural attitude to death. Religious and secular approaches to this issue are compared simultaneously. The importance of the topic in determining the further development of society and its attitude to human life is explained. The authors substantiate the significance of the moment of death as one of the determining factors in the structure of the modern world. The influence of secular worldview and anti-religious propaganda on this problem field is determined. The purpose of the research is to identify and consider the socio-cultural aspects of understanding death in modern society in comparison with the traditional Christian attitude to death. Scientific novelty of the study is a comprehensive comparison of the changes in the understanding of death within the traditional Christianity and its influence on the formation of society in the world; a critical examination of the implications for society of the ideas of existentialism; introduction to the scientific field of new materials, memoirs on the subject.
