Cinema can simultaneously document the observed reality and create a completely new reality from the “captured pieces” of life. Dziga Vertov argued that filmmakers should seek out and expose the hidden social and political forces that control life, using moving images and sound to form the viewer’s consciousness. His films were in dialogue with several avant-garde artistic movements, and he often experimented with various film techniques in the hope of both depicting and transforming reality. Moreover, Vertov argued that media technologies, especially the movie camera and wireless radio, will radically change the way people navigate the world and how they understand their place in society. His theoretical works are fundamental for the discipline of film studies and for works on cinematography and editing. His 1929 film “The Man with the cinema camera” (“The Man with the movie camera”) is the cornerstone of film courses around the world. In the article, the author analyzes the work of the great experimental filmmaker and proves that future students who have devoted themselves to the service of cinema should know his legacy.
