Введение. Статья представляет собой специальное исследование одного из немногих крупных по численности участвовавших сторон сражений заключительного этапа пугачевщины – столкновения донских полков с мятежниками, произошедшего 20 августа 1774 г. при речке Мечетной близ города Царицына. Это сражение состоялось в полевых условиях, без привязки к каким-либо оборонительным укреплениям и завершилось ночным отступлением донских казаков к Царицыну. Методы и материалы. В исторической литературе как досоветского, так и советского периода, это боестолкновение описано довольно скупо, вскользь, с той лишь разницей, что в первом варианте исход сражения традиционно объяснялся трусостью донских казаков, во втором – храбростью «революционно настроенных народных масс». При работе над темой автор статьи вводит в научный оборот ряд новых архивных документов, выявленных им в фондах Российского государственного архива древних актов и Государственного архива Саратовской области. Анализ. Удалось уточнить состав донских полков, установить реальные мотивы этого непродолжительного противостояния, а также развить исследования предшественников и поправить в них ряд неточностей. Результаты. В ходе анализа выявленных материалов становится очевидно, что донцы совершенно непреднамеренно оказались вовлечены в эту стычку, однако в рапортах постарались представить свои действия в максимально верноподданническом свете. В статье дается пояснение, как описываемый эпизод в искаженном позднее варианте явился прообразом для легенды о «ночевке войска Пугачева у деревни Городищ в десяти верстах от Царицына» и его последующем «прорыве» через вал Царицынской линии.

The Battle of the Don Cossacks with the Pugachevites at the Mechetnaya River near Tsaritsyn
Introduction. This article presents a specialized study of one of the few major battles in terms of numbers of participants in the final stage of Pugachev’s Rebellion – the clash between the Don regiments and the mutineers that took place on August 20, 1774, at the Mechetnaya River near the city of Tsaritsyn. This battle came about in the field, without reference to any defensive fortifications, and ended with the Don Cossacks retreating at night to Tsaritsyn. Methods and materials. In the historical literature of both the pre-Soviet and Soviet periods, this clash has been described rather sparingly, in passing, with the only difference being that in the former version, the outcome of the battle was traditionally attributed to the cowardice of the Don Cossacks, while in the latter, it was attributed to the bravery of the “revolutionary-minded masses.” In conducting this research, the author of the article introduces into scholarly circulation a number of new archival documents discovered in the collections of the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts and the State Archive of the Saratov Region. Analysis. By examining new documents and comparing them with existing research on this topic, we were able to clarify the composition of the Don regiments, establish the real motives for this brief confrontation, and also expand on the research of our predecessors and correct a number of inaccuracies. Results. Our analysis of the materials we uncovered and their comparison with existing works on this topic makes it clear that the Don Cossacks were drawn into this skirmish entirely unintentionally, but in the subsequent reports they attempted to present their actions in the most loyal light possible. Furthermore, the article explains how this episode, in its later distorted version, served as the prototype for the legend of “Pugachev’s army spending the night near the village of Gorodishche, ten miles from Tsaritsyn” and his subsequent “breakthrough” through the rampart of the Tsaritsyn line.
