The article discusses the evolution of the use of didactic illustrations in textbooks on the geography of the period of the Russian Empire. Special attention is paid to the variability of images in the composition of the visual series, the meaning of the images, as well as the correspondence of the textual and illustrative part of the educational book. A textbook on geography is considered as a comprehensive publication designed to review the thematic content along with its visualization.
