Edgar Allan Poe's Poem “Dream-Land” as Translated by Russian Poets

This article examines Edgar Allan Poe's poem Dream-Land (1844) and its translations into Russian made in the 19th-20th centuries. In the poem, the American Romanticist describes a mysterious swampy region filled with gigantic lakes, mountains and valleys, and inhabited by fantastic creatures. For the lyrical hero, this land becomes a refuge from miseries of life, where he encounters the shadows of his long-departed friends. The first translation of the poem into Russian (1878) was made by the poet, translator, and critic S. A. Andreevsky (1847–1918). During the Silver Age of Russian Poetry, the Symbolist poets K. D. Balmont (1867–1942) and V. Ya. Bryusov (1873–1924) also published their versions of Dream-Land. In 1972, another translation of the poem was made by the imagist poet N. D. Volpin. In the article, the functions of linguistic means of different levels are analyzed, characteristic features of the poets' individual style are highlighted, accomplishments and shortcomings in the translations are pointed out. It is noted that Andreevsky employs a fairy-tale style and intensifies religious connotations. His poetic lines are somewhat shortened compared to the original; therefore, he resorts to omissions and reductions. Balmont’s and Bryusov’s translations reach a distinctly higher level: the poets aim to produce a text that would match the original in its artistic quality. Balmont's and Bryusov's poetic interpretations are characterized by attention to the imagery and musicality of Poe's ballad, its dark and ominous atmosphere. At the same time, Bryusov strives for academic fidelity and closeness to the original text, while Balmont allows his own ornate style to overshadow Poe’s voice. Volpin aims to recreate the original meter and rhythm; her text is marked by a natural intonation and rich metaphors. While describing a mysterious and wild land, she refers to the images of the Russian winter and cosmic space.
