The article examines the essence of the basic concepts on the problem of discursive competence development in the process of teaching a foreign language to post-graduate students. The problematic of the present article is related to the definition of the content of basic concepts used to consider issues of training academic personnel in the period of postgraduate study. The relevance of the problem under study is associated with the need to develop discursive competence in order to train specialists who use a foreign language as a means of studying original sources of scientific literature in a foreign language, to effectively communicate in a foreign language on the problems of scientific research in the scientific community at the international level. The concept of academic discourse as a process of organized learning activities that promote skills of verbal and written communicative interaction among postgraduates is considered. The author points out the correlation between discursive and communicative competences in order to determine how to form the skills of transforming textual information of scientific literature into new products of speech activity - texts, discourses in the form of a monological statement, dialogue, group discussion. Discursive competence is seen as a process of speech activity, the obligatory result of which is the production of texts corresponding to the goals of scientific communication and reflecting scholarly knowledge.
