The author examines the origins of the spectacular art of modern times, among which he highlights the types of theater that emerged in the Middle Ages (in particular, liturgical drama and mystery, where the story of the Passion of Christ unfolds). The art of this period collided with human tragedy. However, the culture of the New Age, based on opposites, could not help but turn to the opposite to laughter and laughter culture. Theatricalization, play and carnivalization are closely interconnected and are an integral component of both the culture of the New Age as a whole and the performing arts of that period. The sacred and profane spaces of new European culture begin to move, and the boundary between them becomes mobile and permeable, as well as between various types of art, which were characterized by synthetism during this period. One of the synthetic forms of art is opera, the birth of which dates back to this time. Thus, the spectacular art of this era is expanding due to the formation of the operatic genre, which contains both theatricalization and carnivalization.
