The possibilities of educational approaches and the issue of improving the quality of practical training of IT students in the conditions of the new educational reality are considered. The contradictions between the expectations of the labor market, the opportunities of graduates and the educational technologies are revealed. The contradictions between the motivation level of junior students and the complexity of the educational program are also shown. The advantages and disadvantages of approaches and recommended solution based on real-life project trainings and video game developments are presented. The choice of the main programming language, the choice of development tools and some techniques and methods for studying video game development are discussed
