The article is devoted to the issue of the search and formation of self-awareness through the creation of one's own literary canon. Using the example of fiction and literary books by one of the most famous Canadian writers, Margaret Atwood, the key image of young Canadian literature is described - the image of the Surviving Hero, which symbolizes the struggle of young Canadian culture for independence and recognition. M. Atwood's books describe Canada's past, present, and future; reveals the struggle of Canadians with global problems; compares Canadians with representatives of other countries and cultures. Thus M. Atwood postulates the right of Canada and Canadian culture to their own history and development.
