Word stress in the English and Russian languages: main rules and tendencies

The article deals with the tendencies that influence the position of the word-stress in English (recessive, rhythmical, retentive, semantic) and in Russian (the trends of accentuating either the centre of a word or the second half of a word). We also formulate the main rules that determine the position of the word-stress in the languages being compared.
