Текст статьи The heart of Denis Noble
The interweaving of the material and spiritual worlds is demonstrated with the help of several things. First of all, Schubert’s music is played parallel to the operation. I find it interesting that Denis chooses Schubert – he is the founder of romanticism in classical music. Every romantic composer aspired to express the depth and richness of the inner world of a person. Thus, music serves as a kind of the gateway that leads to the character’s consciousness, and his consciousness at this time wanders in memories.
The stream of consciousness that flows through Denis' past is echoed in Schubert's music. I tend to think that the story is constructed like Schubert’s Piano Trio.
Allegro . The first movement is in sonata form with the two main themes in the exposition. This part is characterized by dotted rhythms and irregular phrase lengths while the second theme by contrast has lyrical melodies and regular phrases. If the first theme is revealed
through memories of how Denis bought sheep hearts, then the second, more calm, lyrical and almost erotic, is already connected with his beloved.
The theme of his beloved flows into the memories of the conducted experiments. These memories are more energetic like Andante.
Scherzo and Rondo almost merge. The first is the heavier part of the composition, and Rondo is almost a musical grotesque. The story is dominated by a subconscious journey through memories, we see fragments and try to capture feelings, and therefore the order of parts of the musical composition is often confused, some parts merge and become a continuous stream of sounds.
However, how does this relate to the heart? Schubert’s music is the human heart. Some people may disagree with me, but that's just my opinion. Alison MacLeod uses a romantic dual world and shows how the events of our reality echo the reflection of Denis.
Thus, to be a human being means to exist in two worlds at once. Sometimes we have to penetrate into the world of another person – this happens both among friends and relatives and among couples in love. However, regardless of this, the fact remains that the center that pulls together the threads of reality and our thoughts is the heart.
