The article presents a generalization of the results of a theoretical study of the problem of book typology, aimed at identifying its essential properties and formulating the definition of the category “book”. The article determines the relevance of the topic raised not only for bibliology, but also for all sciences of the information and documentation cycle. Based on the achievements of philosophy, documentology and traditional bibliology, with reference to the specifics of the modern media environment, approaches and methods to the analysis of the book are determined, the use of which makes it possible to build a typological model of the “book” that meets the requirements of the digital society. To build such a model, it is proposed to use a transdisciplinary approach, since on its basis it becomes possible to borrow methods used within one scientific discipline to study the object of study of unrelated scientific disciplines. The use of this approach made it possible to study the book system based on fuzzy logic methods. This made it possible to establish the typological properties of the book, corresponding to the modern realities of the information environment, and to clarify the definition of the concept “book”. The article notes the controversial nature of the research results and contains an invitation to discuss them.
