The hotel market transformation in the Russian Federation in the context of economic and political sanctions: new challenges and opportunities

Due to the situation caused by the economic crisis, sanctions from the EU and the USA, as well as the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, domestic tourism for the population is becoming an increasingly relevant and promising direction. Hotel activities in the fi eld of domestic tourism have a huge impact on the socio-economic development of the country. The dynamics of hospitality development have recently been characterized by the growth of most indicators. After the introduction of economic and political sanctions against the Russian Federation, which entailed the temporary suspension of direct fl ights, the hotel business faced a number of objective diffi culties and problems, but along with this, promising areas of activity and new opportunities have opened up for hotel enterprises. The review of publications provided in the article indicates that the interest in this research topic on the part of Russian scientists is quite high. The authors of this article consider the process of restructuring the hotel market of the Russian Federation associated with the termination of a number of international hotel chains. The authors provide up-to-date statistical data characterizing the changes that have occurred in the hotel business market as a result of the introduction of economic and political sanctions, and note the objective diffi culties that hotel enterprises faced in the spring of 2022. Along with the problems of the hotel business that arose due to these force majeure circumstances, the authors also highlight a number of promising areas in the development of the hospitality industry, characterizing them as new opportunities for hoteliers.
