The published letters belong to the famous theologian Vladimir Nikolaevich Lossky, the addressee of the letters is the deputy patriarchal locum tenens, Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky). While in exile, Lossky was a supporter of the Moscow Patriarchate and defended its rights. At the same time, he participated in theological and canonical polemics and followed the events in his homeland. In the published letters, V. N. Lossky touches upon three important issues. The first letter concerns the church situation in North America. The scholar believed that there should be a single Local Church there, the basis of which would be the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate. The activities of the Church of Constantinople, which created Greek dioceses in the USA, could hinder the creation of a Local Church. Lossky proposed turning the decisions of its own Council of 1872 on the condemnation of the “heresy of phyletism” against the Church of Constantinople. The second letter is devoted to the teaching of Archpriest Sergius Bulgakov on Sophia. In the letter, Lossky discusses the reasons for the spread of this teaching and informs Metropolitan Sergius of his plans to combat it. In the third letter, the author asks a number of questions regarding the title of “His Beatitude”, which Metropolitan Sergius received in 1934, and regarding his appointment to the Moscow cathedra. Lossky drew attention to the fact that such a title during the life of the patriarchal locum tenens, Metropolitan Peter (Polyansky), creates a number of perplexities that need to be resolved.
