The article is based on I. S. Aksakov's and Yu. F. Samarin's correspondence between themselves and other addressees such as N. P. Gilyarov-Platonov, the Baroness E. F. Raden, P. F. Samarin, N. S. Sokhanskaya, A. F. Tyutcheva, the Princess E. A. Cherkasskaya for the period 1864-1866. Some important circumstances of the preparation of the first publication (1865, Slavophil newspaper Den' ) of the most significant Samarin's work «The Answer to the Jesuit Father Martynov» (the book version «Jesuits and Their Attitude towards Russia») and its first edition (1866) are specified. The excerptions of eighteen published letters from the private correspondence of I. S. Aksakov and Yu. F. Samarin and the two published public letters (I. M. Martynov's letter to Aksakov (1864) and I. S. Gagarin's letter to Samarin (1866)) are used. The most informative letter is Aksakov's answer to N. S. Sokhanskaya, dated back to September 12, 1864, in which the Slavophil-publicist gives a detailed explanation of the interrelation between church and state in the West and in Russia.
