The development and improvement of foreign communicative competence in foreign language classes are the most significant stages of speech training of a student of the language faculty, who most often masters a foreign language in an artificial environment. Introduction to the literature and culture of the country of the studied language is provided primarily by subject competencies, including those formed during the discipline “History of English Literature”. This study considers the possibility of using creative tasks for works included in the course to assess the formation of students' subject competencies. The indicators that allow you to do it are presented. The examples of creative tasks for individual works are offered, which can act as a means of controlling the competencies being formed. It is noted that the creative tasks included in the structure of the lesson also contribute to the formation of “cultural” reading skills, involving a thoughtful and critical perception of the text of a literary work in a foreign language. Moreover, it helps with understanding the author's idea and evaluating it from the point of view of one's own position, demonstrating the ability to reason in a foreign language, that is, using arbitrary situationally determined monologue, operating with data on the history and culture of Great Britain.
