Alexei Losev’s Teachings about Absolute and Relative Mythologies Through the Prism of “Philosophy of History” by Lev Karsavin

Free access

The homology of thought structures and approaches in “Dialectics of Myth” by A. F. Losev (1930) and “Philosophy of History” by L. P. Karsavin (1923) is considered, despite all the differences in their terminology. Karsavin’s teaching about the apogee is interpreted in the light of Losev’s teaching about a miracle as the moment of complete discovery of the essence of personality. Karsavin’s triads of classification of religions and cultures in “Philosophy of History” are considered as related to Losev’s triads from “Dialectics of Myth” and “Additions” to the later. Karsavin’s understanding of the relationship between the all-unity and its contracted moments, especially in the historical aspect, is compared with the relationship between absolute and relative mythology in Losev.
