The article highlights the consideration of the linguistic and ethnic features of English lexical units in the sphere of legal discourse. Legal language features involve technical vocabulary, archaic, formal SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT terminology, idiomatic expressions, impersonal and passive constructions, long and complex sentences, and verbosity and redundancy. The author analyzes the essence, linguistic characteristics, and intended meaning of the lexical units preferred in this discourse. The focus is also on culturally marked units that have a close connection with the historical past of the country, the geographical location and the rich cultural heritage of the English ethnic group, which present difficulties in translating this information and are barriers to its perception by native speakers of other cultures and languages. Lexical units that represent the spoken style of a language include many bright figures of speech, which can belong to the categories of both joking, contemptuous, and euphemistic. Errors when working with legal materials containing idioms are the reason that the terminological meaning is perceived as the sum of the values of its individual components, without taking into account the existence of hidden semes or inaccurate identification of these semes. In conclusion, it is necessary to pay special attention to lexical units that have a specific national and cultural character, which are found in various English language texts of legal discourse, as well as to make optimal decisions for their adequate translation, which meet all the necessary criteria for more accurate transmission of ethno-cultural meanings and connotations.
