The aim of the paper is to discuss the relevance of ethno-oriented teaching of Russian as a second language (RASL) and, in particular, the implementation of the principle of taking into account the native language of students in the practice of teaching Russian as a second language. The authors consider the peculiarities of teaching Russian to Arabic speakers based on the results of a comparative description of the two languages. An overview of some ways of expressing aspectual meanings in the system of the Arabic verb is given, and points of correlation with the meanings and peculiarities of the functioning of the Russian verbs are analysed. Having analysed the concurrencies in the semantic and functioning of the Russian verb aspects and the respective ways of expressing of aspect and tenses by the Arabic verbs, the author offers some practical advice for the teachers of Russian as a foreign language on teaching the Russian verb aspects to Arabicspeaking students both online and offline.
