The disciplinary control in the universities of the Russian Empire of the second half of the XIXth century is considered. The influence of the norms, fixed in the statutes and rules, on the development of the “reliable” student is studied. The basic focus of study is shifted to the reaction of the students’ environment. It is shown that the strict prohibitions on corporateness and collective actions haven’t led to the eradication of freethinking and pushed it into the alternative and unofficial environment.
