The review is devoted to data concerning the study of platelet metabolism under different storage conditions. The possibilities of new aspects in the biology of platelet storage are described, which allow establishing the relationship of specific metabolites with the ability of platelets to effectively circulate after transfusion. Researchers are attempting to establish correlations between changes in the content of metabolites in platelets and their post-transfusion viability. A rational approach to transfusion of platelet concentrate, taking into account the degree of platelet activation, will lead to improved clinical efficacy determined by an increase in the number of platelets after transfusion, stable hemostasis and a reduced risk of post-transfusion reactions in recipients.
