Eternal Images in the Works of V.V. Mayakovsky during the First World War

Based on the material of Mayakovsky’s work of 1914–1916, the article considers how the poet’s attitude to the events of the First World War changed. Based on a comparative analysis of captions to popular prints, articles “Civilian shrapnel (Lying with a brush)”, poems “War is declared”, “Mother and the evening killed by the Germans”, “Thoughts in the draft”, “Me and Napoleon”, “To answer!”, poems “War and Peace” are considered as from the victorious bravado of the popular prints and understanding of war as a “forge”, the “repair” of human nature (within the framework of the declarations of the futurists) Mayakovsky went to assess the military operations from a humanistic point of view: “The only human voice, / amidst the howling, / amidst the shrieking, / I raise today”. He protested against the representation of ordinary people as puppets in a slaughterhouse, where economic benefit is more important than life: “The anger of human packs got into a fight, / blow after blow falls on the world / just in order to / someone’s ships pass through the Bosphorus for free” (“To answer!”). The biblical symbolism, to which Mayakovsky turned during this period, was supposed to emphasize not only the “smoking mess of the world”, but also to reproduce the image of heavenly peace and world`s spiritual unity as the ideal state of humanity. In the finale of the poem, the theurgic power of creativity is capable of transforming the images of war and destruction into the image of universal salvation and resurrection in the flesh. Based on the material of Mayakovsky’s autographs and publications of different times, conclusions are drawn about the nature of the poet’s work on verses of this period and the poem “War and Peace”, the peculiarities of the interpretation of Christian symbols.
