The influence of the native language proficiency on the development of cognitive processes and creative abilities in monolingual and bilingual children

The study investigates the influence of native language proficiency on the development of cognitive processes and creative abilities of primary school students. The survey was conducted in secondary schools of Yakutsk, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The impact of bilingualism and monolingualism on the intellectual development of children is considered. The works of the scientists of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on the influence of the native language proficiency on intellectual development, logical thinking and mathematical abilities are analyzed. The study presents the results of psychological tests on the development of cognitive abilities in primary school students depending on the proficiency and non-proficiency of the native language of Yakut and Russian monolingual children and Yakut-Russian bilinguals. Based on factor analysis, the authors reveal a positive impact of native language proficiency on the development of cognitive, creative and intellectual abilities in primary school students.
