In the context of the expanding social mission of libraries and museums, volunteer activity is increasingly seen as an integral part of their sustainable development. Drawing on theoretical approaches (public history, memory studies, participatory culture) and the practices of leading cultural institutions, the article explores the forms and mechanisms of volunteer engagement in institutional work. Strategic planning documents of cultural institutions demonstrate that volunteers are involved in key areas of library and museum activities – from interpreting cultural heritage to fostering sustainable communities. It is shown that volunteers play an important role not only in supporting daily operations, but also in expanding audiences, strengthening community ties, and fulfilling the educational mission of institutions. The article concludes that a systematic approach to volunteering enhances the resilience of libraries and museums and supports their integration into the public sphere.
